This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Augustine's work, The City of God, and specifically on his discussion in book 19 focused on a universal desire for peace in living beings, specifically among human beings. Augustine views peace as one dimension of the supreme good or final end for human beings, and even the deficient, imperfect, corrupt modes of peace that human beings do desire are in some respect good.
Augustine considers several different objections to his assertion that all desire peace, all of which involve those who seek conflict with others. Even in those cases, there is some sort of peace that is desired or relied upon.
