Description
(This is part 2 of 2 . It is 5 minutes long and is primarily a rant to get the kids to stay focused on math on and science to improve their chance of employment some day. The science part of the lecture is in part 1)
This is a lecture I gave to 7th graders in a NYC public school in December 2012. I give this talk about 10 times each year to a total of 300 to 350 kids in 3 downtown public schools. the talk covers the following:
1. that science and understanding the geologic history of the planet can be interesting
2. that they should not get their science from religion
3 that they need to stay on top of math, science and technology studies in order to get a job. Surveys of the future of employment all say 80% plus of future jobs will be in science and technology. I also emphasize that they need to keep up their art and writing. [in part 2 -5minutes long]
I give the kids a 5 minute rant on this last point at the end of the talk and the teachers love it because they like the message but are not as free to say what they think as this non-employed citizen.
I don't expect any of you to watch the whole thing. If you do watch some of it, you may learn something about the history of the planet. I have a masters degree in geology and I have spent a lot of time collecting and simplifying lots of data to get a few key concepts across to these kids. These kids are smarter than most of us, but the data still has to be streamlined.
If you watch it, please do not fact check anything. It won't be good for you or me, just go with the flow.
